primary primary primary extended
*It is better to install the winXP first, then install gentoo, so the grub will detect XP automatically and create the boot menu.
*The IDE hard drive can have 4 primary partitions at most. An extended partition is also a primary partition, which can contain many logical partitions
A full update
emerge –update –ask –deep world
*It’s a long time and better to have a sleep now.
Installing the new kernel
emerge gentoo-sources
*check /usr/src, it will look like:
linux linux-2.6.18-gentoo-r6
*if not, do this:
ln -sfn linux-2.6.18-gentoo-r6 linux
emerge genkernel *easy to configure, compile and install the new kernel
genkernel –menuconfig –bootloader=grub all
After restarting, the new kernel should be working.
X Configuration
emerge xorg-x11
*It’s time to go for a walk or have a cup of tea. : )
*remember to edit /etc/make.conf and add:
INPUT_DEVICES = “keyboard mouse”
VIDEO_CARDS = “nvidia”
env-update
source /etc/profile
Xorg -configure *create xorg.conf
x -config /root/xorg.conf.new *test X
*error: cannot detect mouse device?why?
*After a while, I changed a line in xorg.conf.new to
option /dev/input/mice
*startx again, hoho, it works.
cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
emerge fvwm *my favourite window manager
*edit /etc/rc.conf to choose startx in fvwm
